BLUE LIGHT FOR THE TREATMENT OF ACNE
What is it?
Dr. Reece now offers Blue Light treatment for patients with persistent acne. The Blue Light emits a special 417 nm light that kills bacteria that makes acne worse. It is ideal for those who do not want to take strong medications, and for those who do not respond satisfactorily to conventional treatment. It is a safe, painless, non-invasive procedure utilizing the Dusa Blue Light, a state of the art light treatment.
The patient simply sits in front of the Blue Light for a few minutes, twice a week, for four weeks. Patients with more severe acne may require pre-treatment with amino levulinic acid (Levulan or ALA), at the discretion of your medical provider. In that case, the face is cleansed with a special cleanser, and then the Levulan is applied. The Levulan is allowed to penetrate for about 30 minutes, and then washed off. Patients using the Blue Light and Levulan sit in front of the Blue Light once a week for four weeks.
Most patients feel no discomfort at all. The light feels warm, not hot.
You won't look any different immediately after the procedure. If Levulan was added to your treatment, you will develop some redness and mild swelling over the next 24 hours. Your skin may be sensitive, as if it is sunburned. Comfort measures will be discussed with you prior to your treatment.
The light energy of the Blue Light targets the bacteria present in acne lesions, and destroys it. When Levulan is added to the treatment, the lesions are photosensitized, meaning that the effects of the light are boosted. Additionally, the Levulan plus the light have an effect on the oil glands of the face, acting to shrink them.
